Besides being a tourist spot, the museum is also a means of saving marine life.

You may be enamoured of the diverse arts and cultures of the world and their lineage. But could you imagine that even the deepest depths of water could give you a glimpse of such specimens?

Well, a city in Mexico actually hoards hundreds of antiques not only on land, but also underwater.

Located in Cancun, in Mexico, is the Cancun Underwater Museum, a non-profit organisation, devoted to conservation. Conceived by Marine Park Director Jaime Gonzalez Canto, the museum was completed only very recently, in 2013.

There are three galleries–two underwater and one on land. Inside the museum are housed 500 life-sized sculptures, mostly by Jason deCairesTaylor, among five other Mexican sculptors. The sculptures are based on the theme of interactions between man and environment. Taylor’s work, what he himself calls The Silent Evolution, depicts how humans co-exist with nature, causing both positive and negative impact on the same.

All artworks are made out of material that promote coral and marine life. As the statues were made with pH-neutral cement, coral, seaweed, and algae are able to grow, which marine wildlife can colonise and feed upon.

In the past few years, the museum has attracted a lot of tourists worldwide. In 2013 alone, over 100,000 visitors took a tour of the museum. So, when are you planning to visit?
