Meet the Telangana man who made India proud

Sangareddy: Seasoned Mountaineer from Telangana, Shekarbabu Bachinepally, who ascended the Mount Everest in 2007 for the first time, has made India proud by leading this year’s first team to summit of Mount Everest on Saturday. Six of 23 Indian expedition team led by Shekarbabu has ascended the Mount Everest.

Shekarbabu and his friend Paramesh Kumar, a certified trainer in mountaineering, have set up Transcend Adventures Private Limited, an Adventure and Mountaineering Company in Hyderabad. Transcend Adventures extends logistic support to the mountaineers and they have branches in Moshi in Tanzania and Kathmandu in Nepal. Shekarababu, who scaled the Mount Everest six times was known for guiding Malavath Poorna, the youngest female ever to scale Mount Everest in 2014.

His company has also became the first Indian company to open the North Col route by clearing the snow and fixing the ropes this year. Shekarbabu has credited the work to his nine member expert Sherpa team, which has reached the Summit on May 11 to fix the route. The seasoned mountaineer from Hyderabad also led the largest Indian civilian’s expedition team  ever to Mount Everest this year. The team comprises 23 climbers, one doctor and one team leader. He was also awarded Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award by the President of India in recognisation of his work in mountaineering. Shekarbabu was born and brought up at Mangalapally village of Nakrekal mandal in Nalgonda district, but migrated to Hyderabad with his family.

Shekarbabu, who was cadet of NCC during his college days, had developed interest in mountaineering during an expedition. Later, he had undergone training at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering way back in 2002. He has scaled several peaks in the world before ascending the Mount Everest in 2007. Later, the mountaineer had joined as Assistant General Manager, AP Tourism department, but quit the job in 2013 to pursue his dream of setting up Adventure and Mountaineering Company. He also set up rocking climbing school at Bhongir to provide basic training to mountaineers. Shekarbabu also extended support to Bollywood Director and Actor Rahul Bose, who made Poorna movie recently, a biopic on Malavath Poorna.
