Forest department to rescue 30 deer in Taramani

The Forest Department will attempt to rescue nearly 30 deer that were forced to take to the roads in Taramani on Wednesday. Residents can contact the Forest Department in Velachery in case of any animals or reptiles stray into their localities. Forest Department officials have been carrying out a field inspection of the campus, spread over 26 acres, for the past 15 days and have been feeding the deer. On Wednesday, about 12 staff members of the Forest Department will attempt to rescue the animals and have arranged for adequate nets and cages to catch them. “The deer have been forced to venture outside the campus as new buildings are being constructed and trees and shrubs have been cut, leaving them without adequate shelter,” a Forest Department official told The Hindu.

The move comes after reports of several deer straying from the DLF campus. Forest Department officials have been carrying out a field inspection of the campus, spread over 26 acres, for the past 15 days and have been feeding the deer.

“The deer have been forced to venture outside the campus as new buildings are being constructed and trees and shrubs have been cut, leaving them without adequate shelter,” a Forest Department official told The Hindu. The official said that following the inspection, the department had rectified the broken compound walls and closed possible exit points so that the deer do not venture out. On Wednesday, about 12 staff members of the Forest Department will attempt to rescue the animals and have arranged for adequate nets and cages to catch them.

The operation is likely to go on for three days.

The rescued deer will be transferred to either the Guindy National Park or Vandalur zoo, the official said. Residents can contact the Forest Department in Velachery in case of any animals or reptiles stray into their localities.
